The vitrine, designed by afra and tobia scarpa in the 1960s, is a refined and highly architectural example of italian modern design. Combining elegant proportions, luxurious material contrasts, and functional display space, the piece reflects the scarpa duo’s distinctive ability to create furniture with both visual strength and sophisticated restraint.
the vitrine is executed in walnut, whose warm grain beautifully frames the composition and contrasts with the bold red lacquered panels. This combination of natural wood and saturated lacquer gives the piece a powerful yet elegant presence, emphasizing the refined material language characteristic of maxalto’s finest productions.
the front is organized into three vertical sections. The two side modules are fitted with glass doors framed in walnut, allowing objects to be displayed while remaining protected. These doors close only over the side compartments, leaving the central module open and creating a dynamic architectural rhythm between transparency, depth, and open shelving. The interior is fully finished in red lacquer, with shelves that provide generous display space for books, ceramics, glassware, or decorative objects.
discreet brass details enrich the design, adding subtle points of light and reinforcing the luxurious character of the piece without disturbing its clean, geometric structure. The impressive height and balanced proportions make this vitrine a striking presence in any interior, whether placed in a living room, dining room, library, or gallery-like setting.
more than a display cabinet, this vitrine is a statement of italian design culture, where craftsmanship, color, proportion, and architectural clarity converge in a timeless composition.
