It shows a central figure of the Blessed Mother holding the Christ Child, flanked either side by angels. Below are a group of sitting children reading books. There is a phrase towards the top saying “Mater Amabilis”, which translates to “Mother most lovable”.
The watercolor has gilt highlights, particularly to the angels. The decorative giltwood frame has raised floral corners. The image size is 12” high by 9.5” wide.
Antonio Sotomayor was born in Bolivia in 1902 and moved to San Francisco in the 20’s. He was known as a painter and muralist and was nicknamed San Francisco’s Artist Laureate. He died in 1985 See less
