Trained at the École Nationale de Céramique in Sèvres, Catteau then worked at the Nymphenburg porcelain factory in Munich, where he discovered Jugendstil designs and French Art Nouveau productions, before joining Boch Frères in 1906.
He designed hundreds of decorations, created forms, mastered the chemistry of colors, and taught his art at the local industrial school, where he recruited his assistants. The color palette of the D.1049 design—bright yellow, intense cobalt blue, orange, and vibrant green on a white background—is representative of the factory's golden age, immediately following the gold medal it won at the 1925 International Exhibition of Modern Decorative and Industrial Arts in Paris.
Catteau's creations were then distributed through the art workshops of major Parisian department stores: La Maîtrise at Galeries Lafayette, Pomone at Le Bon Marché, and Primavera at Printemps, thus firmly establishing Kéramis's production at the heart of French Art Deco taste.
Designers and manufacturers with similar affinities: Manufacture de Sèvres, Royal Doulton (Art Deco glazed earthenware), Longwy (polychrome cloisonné enamels), Gouda (Dutch glazed ceramics with stylized floral designs) This piece has an attribution mark,
