Originally, this piece of furniture was a fixed feature within the walls of an old farmhouse, where it served as a larder. The house probably no longer exists, but the built-in cupboard was removed and fitted with both a back panel and legs. Today, this wonderfully rustic, one-of-a-kind piece fits perfectly with the Japanese philosophy of wabi-sabi interior design.

An oak body standing on two skid feet, constructed from planks and largely assembled with hand-forged nails. The front features a frame-and-panelling design with four tall rectangular panels and a surrounding moulding. A door hung on hand-forged iron hinges, featuring two flattened panels with crimped corners. Inside, the cabinet features 4 shelves.

Ready for use, with age-related signs of wear including old woodworm tunnels (not active!) and various wood repairs/restorations. The door has warped slightly over the decades and protrudes slightly at the bottom left, but can be closed with light pressure.

The surface has been stripped of its dark finish and carefully sanded, revealing the beautiful texture of the old oak in an unsealed, matt finish. See less
