WWl Military Souvenir Egyptian Khayamiya Textile Art
Hand stitched antique appliqué Khayamiya made for the military souvenir trade, circa 1915, WWl. This piece measuring 17.75” x 42.5” depicts riders on donkeys gesturing to one another. From the estate of Clara Mairs (1878-1963), companion to Clement Haupers (1900-1982), director of WPA in Minnesota during the American Depression. A multi-media artist in her own right, Clara and Clement traveled widely thru Europe and North Africa in the 1920s.
