Designed by Danish architects Rud Thygesen and Johnny Sørensen for Hansen & Guldborg, the HG Systemi is among the most accomplished modular wall systems of the 1960s Danish furniture canon. This three-bay example — bearing the Danish Furniture Makers’ Control stamp and accompanied by the original HG Systemi brochure — spans approximately 106 inches in its current configuration, with every component fully reconfigurable to suit a different wall or room layout.
The centerpiece is a fitted stereo cabinet, opening from both the top and the front — purpose-built for the hi-fi equipment of the period and a detail that speaks to how thoughtfully the HG Systemi was designed for the way people actually lived. The remaining components include one tambour-door cabinet, one glass-front cabinet, two magazine rack shelves, three narrow shelves, two larger shelves, and two light bars. All cabinet and shelf pieces are executed in Brazilian rosewood with pale birch interiors. The four steel uprights — 78 inches tall with a faux wood finish — carry regularly spaced peg holes that allow shelves and cabinets to be repositioned at will.
The modular nature of the three-bay system means it adapts to almost any space. Components can be arranged symmetrically or asymmetrically, spread across a wider wall or consolidated, with the uprights anchoring the configuration at whatever points suit the room. The dramatically figured Brazilian rosewood — swirling, deep, and richly toned — gives the system a material presence that no reconfiguration can diminish.
