An original vintage photogravure from Edward S. Curtis's monumental The North American Indian, Portfolio IX (1913), depicting a Snoqualmie man of the Coast Salish peoples of the Puget Sound region. A quietly powerful profile study — Curtis at his portrait best, with the sitter wrapped in a striped wool blanket against a luminous, atmospheric ground.
Printed on Japanese gampi tissue, the rarest and most prized of the three handmade papers Curtis used — produced in only a few dozen of the complete sets and reserved for the deluxe edition. The gossamer tissue is chine-collé mounted to its original Holland Van Gelder support sheet, giving the image its characteristic depth and superb registration.
This is a large folio portfolio plate (Plate 319), the grand presentation format, not a small volume gravure. Plate-printed by John Andrew & Son of Boston after Curtis's 1901 copyright photograph.
Inscriptions, as issued in the plate:
Upper left: Plate 319
Lower left (title): SNOQUALMU TYPE
Lower center: From Copyright Photograph 1901 by E.S. Curtis
Lower right: Photogravure John Andrew & Son
Provenance: The collection of Christopher G. Cardozo (1948–2021), the foremost private collector and scholar of Curtis's work; now in private Colorado collection.
Authenticity: A period printing, not a later restrike — no restrikes were ever produced on gampi tissue. The handmade deckled sheet, John Andrew & Son plate credit, crisp plate impression, and Cardozo provenance together confirm a vintage gravure from the original publication.

The image is a strong, evenly inked impression with rich, warm sepia tonality — deep tones in the hair and the dark fold of the blanket, luminous highlights in the wool border — and the crisp registration for which the gampi-tissue printings are prized. Fine detail is fully retained throughout the face and textile. The gampi tissue bearing the image is chine-collé mounted at the corners to its original Holland Van Gelder support sheet, as issued. The Van Gelder sheet is bright and clean, with full deckle edges on all four sides and no trimming. The tissue is securely adhered and lies well; any faint undulation in the gossamer tissue is inherent to the medium and characteristic of these printings — it is not creasing and not a condition defect. No tears, creases, folds, or losses, and no surface abrasions observed in the image. Margins are full and clean. All plate inscriptions are crisp and fully legible: the plate number (Plate 319) upper left, the title (SNOQUALMU TYPE) lower left, the copyright line (From Copyright Photograph 1901 by E.S. Curtis) lower center, and the printer's credit (Photogravure John Andrew & Son) lower right. No restoration or conservation is apparent. Unframed; currently housed in a protective sleeve. Verso: clean, free of hinging, tape residue, and foxing, with no mat burn. less
