Antique Gaudy Welsh Crescent Pinwheel Flow Blue Teapot With Lid, Circa 1840s
A rare and highly desirable teapot in the celebrated Crescent Pinwheel pattern — one of the most sought-after forms in all of Gaudy Welsh collecting. Produced in Staffordshire, England for the American market, this teapot presents the bold cobalt flow blue ground, vivid iron-red floral decoration, and gilded foliate accents across a generous and shapely form. The original lid is present — an increasingly rare find on surviving examples of this age.
As noted on the original provenance label affixed to the plate in this collection, teapots in this pattern were valued at $525 as early as 1977, reflecting their longstanding desirability among serious collectors. Condition is consistent with a working piece of nearly two centuries of age: a chip on the spout, a small glaze flake on the rim edge, a hairline around the base on the inside, and the lid carries one glued chip and two additional chips. These are honest condition issues fairly typical of surviving Gaudy Welsh teapots and are reflected in the pricing. The decoration remains bold and the overall presence of the piece is excellent.
Complete teapots with original lids in this pattern are exceptionally scarce and represent a significant collecting opportunity regardless of condition.
