Antique Gaudy Welsh Crescent Pinwheel Flow Blue Cups & Saucers, Set of 5, Circa 1840s
A rare and wonderful set of five cups and saucers in the highly collectible Crescent Pinwheel pattern — one of the most sought-after designs in Gaudy Welsh pottery. Produced in Staffordshire, England for the American market, this pattern is distinguished by its bold cobalt flow blue border, warm iron-red floral decoration, and gilded foliate accents. The hexagonal-edged form is notably rarer than the standard round edge, adding to the desirability of this set.
The decoration is vibrant and well-preserved, with strong color and gilt throughout. Condition is exceptional for pieces of this age — the saucers are in fine condition with only typical use and wear consistent with nearly two centuries of life. Among the cups, one displays a small glaze flake on the rim, one has a minor under-glaze chip on the rim occurring during manufacture, and one has a small foot rim chip, also consistent with stilt removal during the original firing. None detract significantly from display.
Sets of five in this pattern with matching saucers are extremely rare to find intact.
