Pair of dining chairs by Jens Risom, made in the 1940s–1950s, features a frame in dark-stained solid oak with brass nails. The seat and backrest are constructed from woven cognac leather straps with patination and surface variation. The sculptural frame supports both the seat and backrest, combining structure and function. The brass nails secure the leather to the frame, showing Risom’s attention to material. The design reflects his interest in simple, practical forms using accessible materials.Jens Risom was a Danish-American designer known for bringing Scandinavian design principles to the United States. He was one of the first designers to join Hans Knoll and played a key role in shaping mid-century American furniture. His early work often used surplus military materials, focusing on form, utility, and honest construction. Risom’s designs continue to be recognized for their clarity and influence on modern furniture.Another set of 6 is listed, these come from the same lot
Condition
The chairs are patinated and show discoloration throughout the set, The frames have surface marks and signs of use, which add to their unique character. The overall construction is solid and has already been inspected by a specialist. The leather shows wear and some small cracks, visible in the images. Some straps replaced/exchanged with old straps, some straps are weak and more fragile due to dried leather. These chairs have been part of a restaurant interior since the late 1940s or early 1950s. Over the decades, some straps have been exchanged with other chairs, and there's a natural variation in patina among the chairs. An authentic characteristic that's typical for pieces of this age.
