The slender, curved legs and the clearly divided, tripartite front give the piece a tall, serene proportion that, despite the decorative door ornamentation, appears aesthetically unified. Historical context: bedside tables of this design originated as standard bedroom furnishings and were part of the bourgeois standard of living in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The enclosed door compartment, often lined with marble, served, in the era before en-suite bathrooms, for the hygienic storage of chamber pots and pans directly next to the bed.
