An exceptional, genuine 18th-century Italian copper plate line engraving with etching depicting the celebrated classical antiquity, the Sleeping Hermaphroditus.
Originally drawn delineavit by the highly esteemed painter and draughtsman Giovanni Domenico Campiglia (Italian, 1692–1768), this plate was executed for a major Enlightenment-era catalogue documenting the grand ducal collections in Florence. The engraving showcases breath-taking technical mastery, utilizing fluid, swelling parallel lines and intricate cross-hatching to render the supple, three-dimensional volume of marble and the contrasting heavy texture of the mattress fabric.
The print is presented in a highly desirable, period-correct 19th-century dark wood frame that beautifully complements the historic character of the piece.

Condition Report
Good Vintage Condition. The engraving exhibits a beautifully preserved strike with crisp line definition. In keeping with its 18th-century origin, the paper displays natural, widespread light foxing and minor age-related toning/spotting throughout the margins, giving it an authentic, untouched historical patina. There is a faint, historic horizontal moisture tidemark visible on the lower section of the mounting board and minimal wear to the antique wooden frame. Structurally sound, ready to hang. This piece is attributed to the mentioned designer/maker. It has no attribution mark and no
official proof of authenticity,
