After his initial training, he became an assistant to his father, Jacopo, as early as 1575. He later settled in Venice in 1588, remaining there until his death in 1622. He prospered in the lagoon and lived a life of luxury. Pictorially, after an initial period adhering to his father's style, he moved away from the traditional family style, adopting a pictorial style characterized by tranquil chromatic surfaces, expanses of compact, flat impasto, and diffused light. He was an excellent portraitist, probably thanks to his studies with Passarotti and Pourbus, achieving results similar to Moroni's in terms of expressive quality and psychological insight. His cultural background, in addition to a profound knowledge of 16th-century Venetian painting, included an interest in the Mannerism of Federico Zuccari and the Flemish painting of Abraham Bloemaert and Pauwels Franck, known as Paolo Fiammingo. Among his various pupils, his nephew Jacopo Apollonio stands out. Although he remained faithful to his relatives' style, thanks above all to his considerable naturalistic sense and vibrant use of color, he achieved considerable success in the Veneto region. See less
