A refined Japanese export porcelain beaker vase produced in the Arita region circa 1860–1880. This elegant eggshell porcelain vessel belongs to the high-quality Hichozan Shinpo export tradition associated with the early Meiji period and the renewed international demand for Japanese decorative arts.
The decoration is painted in fine overglaze enamels with theatrical and festival scenes featuring performers, children, fans, bows and hobby horses. The stylised figures and animated compositions reflect the Kabuki-inspired decorative taste popular in Japanese export porcelain of the late Edo and early Meiji periods. The rim is finished with a delicate gilt line.
The underside bears the red overglaze mark “Hichozan Shinpo zō”. The Hichozan Shinpo name referred to a major export consortium directed by Tashiro Monzaemon, who organised porcelain production in Arita for export to Europe and America. Several important workshops participated in this network, including the famous Fukagawa family kilns.
The exceptionally light body and refined painting make this a particularly attractive example of Japanese export porcelain from the transitional late Edo / early Meiji period. A decorative and collectible cabinet object with excellent preservation.
