A finely decorated royal worcester blush ivory covered pot-pourri jar, made in england in 1903. This elegant ornamental form, shape number 1720, represents the refined decorative taste for which royal worcester was admired at the turn of the century, with blush ivory colouring, hand-painted floral decoration and rich gilded detail.
pot-pourri jars were designed to hold fragrant mixtures of dried flowers, lavender and aromatic oils. In late victorian and edwardian interiors they acted as elegant air fresheners, combining practical fragrance with the visual presence of a decorative porcelain object.
the blush ivory ground is among the most recognisable royal worcester finishes. Its soft ivory and pink tones were inspired by fashionable carved ivory objects of the late 19th century, while the satin surface gives the porcelain a warm and refined appearance.
the body is painted with hand-finished floral sprays and enriched with fine gilded highlights. The lower body has moulded spiral fluting leading into a scalloped border, with raised basket-weave detail to the foot and cover rim. The original domed cover is decorated en suite with the vase and finished with a gilt finial.
the underside bears the puce royal worcester mark corresponding to 1903, together with registered design no. 227399 and shape number 1720.
a refined cabinet-scale example of royal worcester blush ivory, combining strong decorative impact, original cover and excellent preservation.
