Item :
Large sculpture depicting a crouching deer calf, made of white vitrified cast ceramic (a ceramic mixture with the addition of kaolin, also known as soft porcelain). The mantle is embellished with small semi-spheres in light bas-relief, an extremely rare and unique decorative detail. The work was created by Giovanni Gariboldi for the prestigious Richard-Ginori factory and bears the green mark of the "San Cristoforo" factory under the base. The work was created around 1940.
Useful information for the item's valuation:
Our market research conducted on the Artprice platform highlights the high collectible value of Giovanni Gariboldi's works. In the "Objects" category, the six most significant auction results range from €3,000 to €6,500; in the "Ceramics" category, top prices range from €2,400 to €5,000, while in the "Furniture" category, the most significant lots exceed figures between €6,600 and €13,200. These hammer prices also include the auction premium, typically 25-30%. In the final photos, we've added some of the artist's auction prices. These are all fairly old prices that, revalued today based on inflation, would represent significantly higher estimates. To provide more specific commercial information on the sculpture presented here, we note that an identical piece is currently listed on 1stDibs for €1,870, under the listing title "Ceramic sculpture "Fawn" by Gariboldi for San Cristoforo - Ginori, Italy, 1930s." Other color variations of the same model are available on the market: a version in shades of gray is listed on Etsy for €1,200, while two examples in shades of brown are listed on "Intondo" for €1,500 and €1,450, respectively. Our white version is one of the rarest and most sought-after on the art market; in fact, among the various pieces we found, ours in white is the only one listed for nearly €1,900 on 1stDibs. This is a rare, documented, and authentic work of great artistic importance, ideal for enriching sophisticated private collections.
Information on the artist and/or manufacturer:
Gariboldi was a designer, sculptor, and modeler. He was born in 1908 and died in Milan in 1971. In 1926, he was personally hired by Giò Ponti as an apprentice modeler at Richard-Ginori. In 1937, some of Giovanni Gariboldi's ceramics and earthenware pieces, made at the "Ginori San Cristoforo" factory in Milan, were a great success at the Exposition des Arts Décoratifs in Paris, where they were awarded the gold medal. In 1946, he was appointed artistic director of all Richard-Ginori factories, a position he held until his death. In the last photos, we have also added a biographical note on the artist, for those interested in learning more. This piece has an attribution mark,
