Usa, design 1952 origin usa period design 1952 designer harry bertoia (san lorenzo, udine, 1915 – barto, pennsylvania, 1978) italian-american sculptor, designer and artist, born arieto bertoia, emigrated to the united states in 1930. He studied at the detroit society of arts and crafts and in 1937 he obtained a scholarship to the cranbrook academy of art in michigan, where he directed the metalworking workshop and met florence knoll, charles and ray eames, eero saarinen and walter gropius. From 1943 he collaborated with charles and ray eames in california. In 1950, he was invited by knoll associates to freely develop his own designs, resulting in the collection of welded steel wire chairs – diamond, side chair, bird, and barstool – presented in 1952, which immediately became an icon of postwar design and is still in production today. From 1953 onwards, bertoia devoted himself mainly to sculpture, creating monumental architectural commissions and the famous sonambient sound sculptures, a series of works made of metal rods that produce sounds through vibration. His works are held in major international museums.
