Set of four side chair model 420, designed by harry bertoia for knoll int. Usa, designed in 1952
origin: usa
period: designed in 1952
designer: harry bertoia (san lorenzo, udine, 1915 – barto, pennsylvania, 1978) an italian-american sculptor, designer, and artist, born arieto bertoia, he emigrated to the united states in 1930. He studied at the detroit society of arts and crafts and, in 1937, received a scholarship to the cranbrook academy of art in michigan, where he directed the metalworking workshop and met florence knoll, charles and ray eames, eero saarinen, and walter gropius. Beginning in 1943, he collaborated with charles and ray eames in california. In 1950, he was invited by knoll associates to freely develop his own designs: this led to the collection of welded steel wire chairs—diamond, side chair, bird, barstool—presented in 1952, which immediately became an icon of postwar design and is still in production today. Starting in 1953, bertoia devoted himself primarily to sculpture, creating monumental architectural commissions and the famous sonambient sound sculptures—a series of works made of metal rods that produce sound through vibration. His works are housed in major international museums.
