Ceramic sculpture of a sailor with an accordion, produced by c.a.s.a. By zulimo aretini. Cameri, 1950s
origin cameri, novara, italy
period 1950s (first half)
artist zulimo aretini (monte san savino, arezzo, 1884 – rome, 1965) a descendant of an ancient umbrian-tuscan family of potters, he completed his apprenticeship at the family kiln in borgo fonte, where he learned the graffito decoration techniques typical of the 16th-century umbrian-arezzo ceramic tradition, which he reinterpreted in a modern and original way. He completed his studies in florence and milan, at the brera academy. He worked at galileo chini’s san lorenzo kilns in 1909 and later at richard-ginori in sesto fiorentino. In 1918, he opened his own factory in monte san savino; in 1925, a workshop in arezzo; and later in fontevegge, in the province of perugia, where he founded the società anonima maioliche zulimo aretini, which merged in 1929 with the c.i.m.a. (consorzio italiano maioliche artistiche). In 1950, he founded the c.a.s.a. (ceramica artistica aretini) factory in cameri (novara) with his son galileo and guido carnesecchi. He participated in the national ceramics competition in faenza in 1942 and 1952, and in 1951 he exhibited at the p. Ranzini gallery in milan. In the 1950s, ceramic sculpture became the focal point of his artistic production. He eventually moved to rome, where he died in 1965.
