A sculptor and … Read more Art Deco sideboard, crafted in solid walnut and walnut veneer, was designed around 1930 by Jacques Philippe. A sculptor and decorator established in Rennes from 1925, Philippe founded his Atelier d’Art Celtique, producing furniture and decorative ensembles inspired by Breton artistic traditions. Considered one of the pioneers of the regional furniture revival in Brittany, he played an important role in the modernization of Breton decorative arts, combining modernist geometry, Celtic influences, and organic forms.

The sideboard displays an architectural composition characteristic of this regional modernist aesthetic, balancing restrained lines with geometric volumes. The façade opens through three doors, including a slightly projecting central door adorned with a remarkable carved panel featuring geometric and floral motifs. The piece rests on a molded base decorated with vertical fluting.

Inside, the cabinet is fitted with shelves and drawers, providing generous and practical storage.

The walnut showcases a rich and expressive grain, while the quality of execution reflects the craftsmanship of the period. A “Jacques Philippe” signature is present on the piece.

Like the members of the Seiz Breur movement, founded in Brittany in the 1920s, Jacques Philippe sought to renew Breton decorative arts through a synthesis of regional traditions, artisanal expertise, and modern design principles.
