Excellent piece of viennese bronze art around 1920: five native americans in war dress, armed with rifles, axes and spears, galloping at full speed across rough terrain towards their target. A particularly dynamic and expressive depiction of the figures and horses, patinated bronze, cold painted in colours, artist’s signature ‘kauba’ on the bronze plinth beneath the last figure, mounted on a large, heavy marble slab in green, black and white. Excellent and detailed quality of the composition, very lifelike representation, as is typical for viennese bronze art. Designed by carl kauba (1865 - 1922) born karl kauba, was an austrian sculptor and creator of small-scale sculptures, and a leading figure in the viennese bronze movement. He produced and exported his depictions of cowboys and native americans for the american market in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Kauba never visited america himself, but drew inspiration from the romantic stories of the german author carl may, as well as from the many photographs and illustrations of the period that he had seen. He produced some of his sculptures under the pseudonym ‘t. Curts’. Made circa 1920 bronze modeling, casting, patinated and cold painted dimensions: height: 27,0 cm / 10.62 in width: 70,0 cm / 27.55 in depth: 16,0 cm / 6.29 in marble: 61,0 x 16,0 x 4,0 cm / 24.01 x 6.29 x 1.57 in gross weight: 24512 grams / 862.82 oz / 788.16 troy oz marks: signed 'kauba' condition: very well maintained - slight signs of wear on the marble plinth this piece is attributed to the mentioned designer/maker.
