marcel breuer was a german-hungarian architect and designer. He was one of the central figures in modern architecture and design in the 20th century. Marcel breuer began his career in 1920 at the bauhaus in weimar, where he started an apprenticeship as a cabinetmaker and was later appointed head of the furniture workshop. Inspired by the dutch de stijl movement and soviet constructivism, breuer began designing innovative furniture from tubular steel. Among his creations were the cantilever chair b32 and the radically avant-garde club chair b3 (wassily) from 1925.
due to his jewish heritage, marcel breuer left germany after hitler's rise to power in 1933. After periods in budapest and london, he emigrated to the usa in 1937. In the united states, he co-founded the architecture department at harvard university with walter gropius. From 1946 onward, marcel breuer worked exclusively as a freelance architect. In the following years, he created an impressive body of groundbreaking buildings, including the
unesco headquarters in paris.
