This rare pair of japan easy chairs, model fd-137, accompanied by matching footstools, was designed by the renowned danish designer finn juhl and produced by france & son in denmark during the 1950s. A quintessential example of danish mid-century modernism, the design reflects juhl’s emphasis on sculptural form, clean lines, and an elevated sense of comfort. Crafted from solid teak, the frames display the warm tones and pronounced grain characteristic of this hardwood, which was a favored material in juhl’s work. The horizontal structure and gently curved armrests are inspired by the formal balance and minimalism of traditional japanese architecture. The chairs have a distinctive floating seat design, with the backrest connected to the frame via visible brass fittings that add a subtle decorative accent and reinforce the structural elegance. The chairs have been newly reupholstered in high-quality wool fabric, chosen for its durability, softness, and compatibility with the mid-century aesthetic. The upholstery is crisply tailored, offering excellent comfort while preserving the integrity of the original design. The seat and back cushions are well-proportioned and generously padded, inviting relaxation without compromising the chairs’ visual lightness. The accompanying footstools mirror the construction and material palette of the chairs, creating a cohesive ensemble that enhances both comfort and usability. Their low, rectangular shape complements the extended form of the chairs, making them ideal for reclining or for use as standalone accent pieces. Finn juhl was a pioneer in redefining postwar furniture design, known for blending functional design with sculptural qualities. His training as an architect and his sensitivity to form and proportion are evident in the japan model, which merges international influences with scandinavian sensibilities. The collaboration with france & son enabled juhl to bring his refined designs into serial production while maintaining a high level of craftsmanship. France & son was one of denmark’s most innovative furniture manufacturers of the period, known for its forward-thinking techniques and close partnerships with leading designers. Their production of the fd-137 model ensured quality execution and contributed to the chair’s lasting reputation. This pair of easy chairs and footstools is in excellent vintage condition. The teak frames display a rich, even patina with only minor signs of use. The brass fittings have aged naturally, showing a soft, consistent tone. The new wool upholstery is pristine, providing both visual and tactile refinement. As a complete and rare set, these pieces embody the essence of danish modernism—functional, expressive, and crafted to endure. They represent a high point in finn juhl’s design legacy and remain as relevant and elegant today as when they were first introduced.
