A beautiful set of four Japanese Satsuma earthenware vases dating from the late Meiji to early Taisho period, circa 1900–1920. Richly decorated in the traditional Satsuma palette of gilt, iron red, cobalt blue, and polychrome enamels, the group includes a matched pair of baluster-form vases and a pair of handled urn-form vases.
Each vase is meticulously hand-painted with figural scenes depicting scholars, noblemen, and attendants amid stylized landscapes, rendered with the exceptional detail and abundant gilding characteristic of fine export Satsuma wares. The handled examples feature elegant dragon-form side handles, while all four vessels display intricate geometric and floral ornamentation covering nearly every surface.
The bases retain maker's marks, consistent with quality Satsuma production from the late Meiji and early Taisho eras. Displayed together, the four vases create an impressive decorative ensemble and offer a wonderful example of the artistry that made Satsuma ceramics highly sought after by Western collectors in the early twentieth century.
