The trug has a long history in the English kitchen garden. The word derives from the Old English trog — a shallow wooden vessel — and the form was popularized in the early 19th century by Sussex craftsmen who bent and steamed chestnut and willow into the distinctive shallow basket shape favored by gardeners for carrying cut flowers, herbs, and vegetables from garden to house. By the Victorian era the trug had become as much a symbol of cultivated country life as it was a working tool, appearing in everything from Royal gardens to cottage plots. This example carries that tradition forward with the quiet authority of genuine use.

The pine tray set — two pieces, hand-painted in a rich Dijon mustard chalk paint — rounds out the grouping beautifully.
