A sculptural planter attributed to the Turin workshop of Victor Cerrato, dating to the 1960s. The cylindrical form is clad in copper, its surface deeply etched with abstract motifs and burnished to a warm metallic glow. Raised on three blackened metal legs, the vessel hovers lightly above the ground.
Machined and hand-finished, the piece reflects Cerrato's exploration of modernism through metalworkwhere industrial process met artisan touch. Ideal as a planter or standalone decorative object, it carries the spirit of mid-century Italian craft and experimentation. A slightly taller planter is available here, to make a pair.
Victor Cerrato (1917-2008) was an Italian sculptor and ceramist who founded his Turin workshop in the postwar years, a period marked by both rebuilding and artistic reinvention. His work bridged the worlds of craft and modernism rooted in the tactile language of folk tradition yet reaching toward new, sculptural forms that spoke to the optimism and experimentation of mid-century Italy.
With a distinctive hand and material sensitivity, Cerrato transformed clay into rhythmic, architectural compositions that blurred the line between object and art. His influence resonated with a later generation of Italian makers, including Nerone Ceccarelli, co-founder of NP2 (Nerone & Patuzzi), whose own sculptural furniture carried forward Cerrato's pioneering spirit of form, texture, and expressive modernity.
Condition: Great vintage condition. The copper surface shows areas of patina and light wear consistent with age, including darkening and spotting to the etched motifs. The interior exhibits oxidation and residue from prior use as a planter. The blackened metal legs display minor surface wear and losses to finish but remain sturdy and secure. Structurally sound and ready for use.
