This wonderful antique Swedish marriage box dates to 1798 and is a beautiful example of Scandinavian folk art from the late 18th century. Traditionally, these painted boxes were often created to commemorate a marriage and used to hold treasured personal belongings, textiles, keepsakes, or household items. Pieces like this were highly personal objects, with their painted decoration reflecting regional traditions, symbolism, and the hand of the individual craftsman who created them.
The box features classic bentwood construction with a warm aged surface and exceptional original polychrome painted decoration. The lid is beautifully decorated with a bride and groom surrounded by bold floral motifs and traditional folk designs, along with the prominently painted date of 1798. The sides continue the decoration with colorful floral elements, creating a piece that is visually striking from every angle. The charming simplicity of the figures, vibrant colors, and centuries-old patina capture the character and appeal that make Scandinavian folk art so highly collected.
The box is in nice antique condition with wear consistent with age and normal use. There is expected wear to the painted surface, edges, and finish from over two centuries of history, along with minor age-related imperfections visible in the photos. The age and wear contribute beautifully to its authenticity and character, telling the story of a cherished object that has survived since the 18th century. A wonderful early Swedish folk art piece with outstanding color, history, and decorative appeal. 6h x 11w x 15d
