Vintage Chinese Hand Painted Blue and White Jingdezhen Jiangxi (江西) Porcelain with Five Imperial Dragon Pattern Sweetmeat Container
The design on the sweetmeat container is with five Imperial multi dragons in an auspicious design ruling heaven and earth. Surrounded with a traditional Chinese Cloud and Thunder - Yunwen and Leiwen Pattern, trimmed with a stylized classic water and seas border in beautiful vibrant blue and white colours...thus the Emperor's title 'Son of Heaven"...!
The five dragon pattern is surrounded with a wealth of rich symbolism, each dragon representing one of the five colour elements (五行) in traditional Chinese principals throughout several of the dynasties. Historically, the Chinese dragon was associated with the Emperor and used as a symbol to represent imperial power...The pattern symbolizes abundance and good fortune...
This sweetmeat container is very unusual from the traditional design of most pieces of this shape and it would be hard to find it on the open market again.
The Original Porcelain mould for these planters were produced in the early part of the 20th century and many were destroyed as the porcelain factories were being closed down throughout China's modernization years.
The Chinese Blue and white Pottery (青花) with the cobalt blue pigment is one of very few pigments that can withstand one of the highest firing temperatures that are required to produce a glass like appearance. This sweetmeat container is painted with a range of hues and the graduation of the '青花' colours...
