AMERICAN FOLK ART · C. 1820
Hand-cut and gilt-painted, ebonized frame with cast brass acorn-and-oak-leaf hanger
Some things are worth crossing water for. We slipped over to Nantucket just before the season descended — raw wind off the harbor, quiet streets — and found this among the contents of a grand shingle cottage being dispersed to the world.
A miniature silhouette of a young child, cut with a confident hand and finished with gilt brushwork catching the collar and shoulder in warm gold. Set beneath a convex glass lens in a gilded brass oval bezel, mounted on an ebonized wood panel — the format of the best American silhouettists of the Federal period. The hanging hardware alone is worth pausing over: a cast brass acorn-and-oak-leaf charm, every bit as considered as the portrait itself.
The verso carries an inscription in a period hand — "Lydia Pearce, married..." — a rare thread connecting this small object to a real New England family. Named subjects surface infrequently. This one comes with its story intact.
Silhouettes were the portrait photography of their age — affordable, fashionable, and surprisingly intimate. At their peak in America between roughly 1790 and 1840, the best practitioners combined a steady hand with genuine artistry, often adding gilt details to lift a cut profile into something closer to a painting. This one belongs to that better tradition.
