This stunning Mid-Century work is an original oil landscape titled "Half Dome" by the listed Belgian-American artist Robert L. Elsocht (1908–1999). Born in Belgium, Elsocht immigrated to the United States and spent most of his career in the San Francisco Bay Area
Elsocht was highly drawn to grand, dramatic landscapes, spending decades painting the high-altitude wonders of the French Alps and California's Sierra Nevada mountains. Yosemite Valley was a primary muse for him, and he created multiple large-scale compositions capturing its most iconic landmarks.
This large-scale canvas perfectly demonstrates Elsocht’s unique brand of Representational Expressionism, a style bridging California Impressionism with mid-century semi-abstraction. To achieve it, Elsocht favored heavily textured, impasto surfaces. Rather than using soft, blending brushstrokes, he applied thick layers of oil paint with a palette knife. This technique is visible in the fractured, geometric planes of Half Dome's sheer granite face and the choppy, energetic white-water rapids of the Merced River below.
The piece captures the raw, cool light of a high-altitude Sierra afternoon. He utilizes deep viridian greens and earthy umbers for the dense pine forest, juxtaposed against brilliant turquoise, teal, and frothy whites in the river.
Elsocht once noted that while nature was his direct motif, his primary love was composition and design. In this piece, he distills Yosemite's complex topography into highly structured, clean geometric visual patterns—using the tall, vertical framing of the lakeside evergreen trees to balance the massive, imposing horizontal weight of Half Dome
At roughly 36 x 41 inches framed, this is considered a major, exhibition-sized canvas for Elsocht. Most of his commercial gallery pieces were smaller, meaning a piece of this scale was typically intended as a central statement work for a gallery show or mid-century estate. His elegant script signature, "Robert Elsocht", is clearly visible in the lower right corner, executed in a fluid white paint that stands out against the dark shadows of the tree trunk.
His work has been exhibited widely throughout the United States and is represented in several notable permanent collections, including the De Young Museum in San Francisco, the Oakland Art Museum, the Richmond Art Center and the Pioneer Museum.
