On offer is a vibrant work of contemporary outsider folk art celebrating the seminal 1980s Washington, D.C. hardcore punk movement. The artwork juxtaposes classical 19th-century military imagery with legendary underground music counterculture. It employs a highly expressive, raw, neo-expressionist aesthetic reminiscent of street art or album flyers from the punk era.
The central image parodies or mimics historical American Civil War artwork, depicting a regiment of Union soldiers in blue uniforms, marching in strict formation with bayonets fixed and an American flag waving behind them.
Bright yellow hand-painted text explicitly frames the work around the D.C. Hardcore (HarDCore) scene; DC HARDCORE" is written across the top border.
"BAD BRAINS" anchors the bottom left, shouting out the legendary African-American pioneers who essentially invented the lightning-fast D.C. punk sound. "MINOR THREAT" runs vertically down the left side, honoring Ian MacKaye's incredibly influential straight-edge band. "RITES OF SPRING" lines the right border, referencing the band that famously shifted hardcore toward personal, emotional lyrics—a style that birthed the "emocore" and emo genres.
The painting is executed on a square sheet of unfinished construction-grade plywood (visible from the raw grain, wood knots, and lack of priming on the reverse side).
The back contains no signature but features a crude wire hanger twisted into the wood. Strikingly, dripped trails of brown and black paint spill over the edges onto the back, suggesting the artist painted it quickly while it was upright, emphasizing a raw, spontaneous "Do-It-Yourself" (DIY) ethos central to punk rock culture.
Signature/Maker’s mark: Nonexistent.
