An exceptional and beautifully preserved American antique 5-stack modular barrister bookcase manufactured by the historic Weis Manufacturing Company (Monroe, Michigan), dating to the early 20th century (circa 1910s–1920s). Highly favored by designers for its stately profile and legendary versatility, this complete "elastic" stacking unit retains its original crown top molding and clean, tapered-leg footer base.
Crafted with a handsome,mission brown finish, the frame delivers a striking visual contrast against the beautifully preserved light wood interior backing panels. The five matching glazed sections feature their iconic original mechanism—the protective glass doors lift seamlessly and glide smoothly straight back into the unit. Each pull-out frame is completed by its original, central solid brass hardware knob.
Whether configured traditionally to protect a rare library collection, styled as a sophisticated cabinet for fine porcelain, or transformed into an ultra-chic home bar to showcase premium whiskey and glassware, this iconic piece effortlessly injects historic warmth and architectural interest into both traditional and modern spaces.
* Creator: Weis Manufacturing Company
* Period: Early 20th Century / Mission & Arts & Crafts Era
* Place of Origin: United States
* Materials: Hardwood (Oak/Maple), Glass, Brass
* Condition: Excellent condition with minor, authentic wear consistent with age and gentle historic use. The entire bookcase has been given a new finish consistent with its age and time period. The original faux mahogany finish was failing and rubbing off upon contact. Each component has been carefully sanded and given a dark raw umber stain which was subsequently sanded back to highlight the grain of the oak. Each component was then given a traditional hand rubbed shellac finish using a technique known as French Polishing. Each section has at least six layers of hand rubbed clear shellac giving them a deep, lustrous finish. Structural integrity is rock solid, and all lift-and-slide door mechanisms operate beautifully. Original hardware and glass remain intact.
* The interior shelves have a shelf depth of 10” and a usable interior height of 10”.
