Racinet’s monumental six-volume work remains one of the most important 19th-century visual encyclopedias of historical costume and decorative arts, admired for its scholarly precision and extraordinary use of color. The plate illustrates a wide range of Byzantine figures, including emperors, saints, bishops, aristocrats, attendants, and courtly women, each dressed in elaborate ceremonial garments characteristic of the Byzantine Empire. The composition presents a fascinating overview of Byzantine textile culture, religious vestments, and imperial symbolism, with richly patterned robes, jeweled crowns, embroidered tunics, and ecclesiastical attire rendered in exquisite detail. The costumes demonstrate the strong blend of Roman imperial tradition and Eastern ornamental influence that defined Byzantine visual culture for centuries. Racinet’s chromolithographs are especially prized for their vivid palette and decorative quality. Using advanced chromolithographic printing techniques of the late 19th century, the plates achieved remarkable depth and brilliance, faithfully reproducing gold effects, textile ornamentation, and intricate historical patterns. These prints were intended not only as scholarly references but also as luxurious decorative works appealing to collectors, designers, architects, and artists. This particular plate has exceptional decorative presence due to its balanced arrangement of standing figures and harmonious palette of reds, blues, greens, golds, and soft earth tones. It works beautifully as both a historical study and an interior statement piece, particularly suited for classical, Mediterranean, ecclesiastical, or maximalist interiors. Racinet’s works remain highly influential today and continue to inspire fashion historians, costume designers, museum curators, and collectors of historical ornament and costume studies. Condition: Good antique condition with age-related toning and minor handling wear. Small edge irregularities and light creasing consistent with age. Colors remain fresh and vibrant. Wide margins preserved. Framing tips: Particularly striking in a dark walnut, gilded, or ebonized frame with a wide ivory or warm cream museum mat. Also works beautifully in richly layered eclectic or Byzantine-inspired interiors. The print is an original antique chromolithograph, not a reproduction. All items we offer are authentic period works of art over 100 years old. The piece is sold unframed; any framed images are shown for presentation and interior inspiration only and may not always be to scale.
