Racinet’s monumental six-volume survey of historical costume and ornament remains one of the finest achievements of 19th-century decorative publishing, admired for its exceptional chromolithographic quality and scholarly precision. The composition focuses on medieval ecclesiastical vestments and episcopal regalia from Christian Europe during the Middle Ages. The plate presents two bishops in ceremonial attire alongside a detailed selection of Gothic mitres, embroidered liturgical ornament, decorative bands, and ecclesiastical textile designs. The figures are shown holding croziers, the pastoral staffs symbolic of episcopal authority, while wearing elaborate copes and vestments richly decorated with medieval geometric and floral motifs. At the center of the composition are several highly ornate mitres rendered with remarkable precision and color. These ceremonial headdresses feature Gothic architectural forms, jeweled ornamentation, heraldic motifs, fleur-de-lis decoration, and sacred iconography inspired by illuminated manuscripts and cathedral decoration. One particularly striking mitre includes the inscription “Ave Maria Graciena,” surrounded by devotional imagery and Gothic tracery. Racinet created these plates not merely as costume studies, but as comprehensive visual documents of historical design. Drawing from medieval manuscripts, church treasures, stained glass, liturgical textiles, and sculptural sources, he transformed historical research into highly decorative works of art. The careful symmetry and balanced arrangement give this sheet an almost architectural appearance, while the luminous reds, blues, creams, and gold tones evoke the atmosphere of Gothic cathedrals and illuminated devotional books. Produced using advanced chromolithographic printing techniques, the plate demonstrates the extraordinary richness and detail possible in late 19th-century color printing. Racinet’s works remain highly influential among historians, museum curators, textile designers, and collectors of medieval and ecclesiastical art. The multilingual title at the top — “Middleages,” “Moyen-Age,” and “Mittelalter” — reflects Racinet’s international presentation style and the broad European audience for whom the publication was intended. Condition: Good antique condition with age-related toning and minor handling wear. Small edge imperfections and light marginal wear consistent with age. Colors remain vivid and decorative. Framing tips: Particularly striking in a dark walnut, gilded, or ebonized frame with a warm ivory museum mat. Excellent for Gothic revival, ecclesiastical, library, or old-world European interiors. The print is an original antique chromolithograph, not a reproduction. All items we offer are authentic period works of art over 100 years old. The piece is sold unframed; any framed images are shown for presentation and interior inspiration only and may not always be to scale.
