JOHN BENTHAM-DINSDALE (1927–2008)
America's Cup 1881: Mischief and Atalanta
An important marine oil painting by renowned British maritime artist John Bentham-Dinsdale, depicting the opening moments of the 1881 America's Cup race off New York Harbor.
Executed in oil on canvas, the composition portrays the American defender Mischief establishing an early lead ahead of the Canadian challenger Atalanta, surrounded by a flotilla of steam yachts, excursion vessels, committee boats, and spectator craft gathered to witness one of the most celebrated events in nineteenth-century yacht racing.
Bentham-Dinsdale was widely respected for his meticulous research and technical accuracy, qualities clearly evident throughout this work. The elegant racing yachts are rendered with exceptional attention to sail plans, rigging, hull forms, and maritime detail, while subtle atmospheric effects across sea and sky create depth, movement, and realism.
The painting captures the grandeur of Victorian competitive sailing and documents a pivotal moment in the history of the America's Cup, then emerging as the world's premier international yachting contest. The defender Mischief, designed by naval architect Archibald Cary Smith and built by Harlan & Hollingsworth of Wilmington, Delaware, successfully retained the trophy against the Canadian challenger Atalanta.
A particularly desirable feature is the extensive handwritten inscription on the reverse by the artist. The inscription records the race, identifies the competing yachts, and includes technical specifications relating to Mischief, together with historical notes concerning the vessel's construction and racing career. Such detailed annotations are a hallmark of Bentham-Dinsdale's finest works and significantly enhance the painting's documentary and collector appeal.
John Bentham-Dinsdale remains one of the most respected British marine painters of the twentieth century. Trained as an architect before pursuing a full-time artistic career, he became internationally recognized for his highly researched depictions of historic sailing vessels, naval subjects, tea clippers, and famous yacht races.

A particularly desirable feature of this painting is the extensive handwritten historical inscription on the reverse by Bentham-Dinsdale himself. The reverse inscription records the challenger as "Atlanta", whereas the yacht's official name was Atalanta. This appears to be a minor spelling variation by the artist, whose extensive accompanying notes otherwise demonstrate considerable historical research and technical accuracy.
The inscription includes:
> "The America's Cup 1881
> The start of the race
> The defender Mischief leading
> followed by the challenger Atlanta."
Additional notes record that *Mischief* was:
> "built by Harlan & Hollingsworth
> at Wilmington, Delaware"
together with detailed technical specifications including:
* Waterline length approximately 61 feet
* Cabin trunk approximately 30 feet
* Cockpit length approximately 9 feet
* Mast to hounds approximately 63 ft 6 in
* Topmast approximately 41 feet
* Main boom approximately 62 ft 6 in
* Spinnaker boom approximately 43 ft 8 in
The inscription further references successful Cup trials against competing sloops including *Hildegard* and *Pocahontas* and concludes with the artist's signature and catalogue reference:
> "John Bentham-Dinsdale"
> "OP No. 999"
Such documentary inscriptions are a hallmark of the artist's finest works and significantly enhance historical interest, and collector appeal.
