Cy Twombly
American, 1928–2011
Cy Twombly was one of the most distinctive American artists of the postwar era, celebrated for his gestural canvases that blend painting, drawing, and writing into an intimate visual language. Born in Lexington, Virginia, Twombly studied at the Art Students League of New York, the Museum School in Boston, and Black Mountain College, where he was mentored by Robert Motherwell and Franz Kline. He spent much of his career in Italy, where classical antiquity deeply informed his imagery. This poster featuring Nicola's Iris, Gaeta (1990) was produced in 2002, in conjunction with the exhibition Cy Twombly at Inverleith House, Edinburgh, which emphasized natural forms in keeping with the venue's renowned botanical garden.
