A charming circa 1900 small gouache painting on canvas of a Cow in a Stream by Canadian / American listed illustration artist Robert Atkinson Fox who lived from 1860-1935. Fox created artwork, primarily of animals and nature scenes, that was widely reproduced and distributed throughout the United States, but this is an original painting. The canvas is painted in muted tones of a matte paint so it seems to be gouache, as it does not have the sheen of oil paint.
The canvas itself measures 8"x10". The period frame (unknown if it is original to the piece) measures 15"H x 12.75"W x 2.75"D.
In as found condition, commensurate with its age. I does not appear that this painting has ever had any conservation work, seemingly in original condition. There seems to be a light layer of dust or dirt on the canvas and would improve with a cleaning by a professional conservator who knows how to work with water based gouache paints. Note the scratch in the upper left. The canvas is still taught on the stretcher, though the stretcher itself is missing three keys, see back views. The canvas is mounted in the old frame with two screws through the canvas screw eyes. The old frame is sturdy but has a number of surface abrasions. The painting could be hung in the current frame or it could be reframed.
