In Sepik River cultures, these statues do not simply represent ancestors. Rather they are believed to act as temporary physical vessels or houses for powerful clan spirits. Such figures were traditionally kept deep inside the highly restricted Haus Tambaran (men's ceremonial house). They were brought out primarily for male initiation ceremonies or agricultural festivals.
The long, stylized nose, heavy-lidded narrow eyes, elongated torso, and geometric white line patterns (representing traditional body scarification and ritual paint) are classic diagnostic features of Middle Sepik tribal art. The oversized phallus here symbolizes the fertility of the entire clan, the abundance of crops (especially long yams), and successful hunting. Among the Iatmul people, from whom it may have originated, an exaggerated phallus represents male power, prowess in warfare, and ancestral strength meant to protect the village and ward off evil spirits.
Now attached to a rectangular, finished wood backing, it serves as a striking, authentic representation of Sepik cosmology, designed to be hung or displayed in a private collection. Perhaps yours.
