Awarded the Legion of Honour in 1926 for his contribution to ceramic arts, Charles Gréber (1853–1935) is one of the most collected figures in French ceramics from the Art Nouveau/Art Deco transition.
Taking over the Beauvais factory on his own in 1900, he developed flamed stoneware and architectural ceramics, designing the decoration of numerous French buildings in a style that was initially Art Nouveau, then distinctly Art Deco after 1920.
This vase perfectly illustrates this shift: the dense, matte flamed green glaze, the friezes of incised, hatched chevrons, the rows of raised dots, and the horizontal fluting constitute a completely geometric decorative program, without any concession to the naturalism that characterized his earlier work.
