Appointed artistic director of the Fantasy section of Keramis in 1907, Charles Catteau remained in this position until his retirement in 1946—four decades of uninterrupted production that made him the central figure of the Belgian manufacturer and one of the most collected Art Deco ceramists in Northern Europe.
The D.1121 design, dated 1928 and listed in the Catteau Collection at the King Baudouin Foundation as well as in Marc Pairon's definitive monograph, features large stylized flowers with rounded petals, outlined in brilliant cobalt on a crackled aquamarine background, with flat, lanceolate foliage.
His compositions draw inspiration from Japonism, Cubism, and the abstraction of nature—evident here in the floral stylization and the interplay between thick outlines and areas of matte glaze. The cloisonné technique is reminiscent of Longwy enamels or Rörstrand productions, but with a graphic density characteristic of the Belgian workshop.
Green stamp "Made in Belgium – Boch Frès – La Louvière – Belgian Manufacture" on the reverse, shape number 268 impressed. Tiny chip on the rim, repaired. This piece has an attribution mark,
