These exceptional lounge chairs belong to the early period of Alvar Aalto’s bentwood production in France. In the early 1930s, Aalto’s curved plywood designs began circulating across Europe through a small network of modernist galleries and distributors. In France, this role was taken up by Stylclair in Lyon — a forward-thinking retailer established by Marcel Michaud and C.L. Zenone. Through a close collaboration with Wohnbedarf in Zurich, Stylclair obtained the exclusive rights to offer Aalto’s wooden furniture in the French market. By 1934, they even opened a dedicated showroom in Paris presenting the newest modern designs by Aalto and his contemporaries. These chairs reflect that early chapter. The gentle curves of the bent beech plywood frame echo Aalto’s breakthrough work from the early 1930s, when he first explored free-flowing forms shaped from laminated wood. The seats are woven in thick natural rope, a detail that resonates with regional craftsmanship traditions. During this period, it was not unusual for European distributors to adapt or customise Aalto’s designs for local clients, and woven versions such as these are known to have been produced within that context. The result is a rare and highly atmospheric pair: sculptural bentwood frames paired with tactile rope seating, giving them both lightness and warmth. They remain in good vintage condition with a soft, authentic patina on the wood and strong, stable weaving.
