This meticulously crafted ceramic vase by Eva Kumpmann (1920-1917) showcases the characteristic combination of clear formal language and finely structured surface decoration for which the artist is known. The rounded, strictly proportioned silhouette with its slender neck is framed by a continuous, hand-carved relief of lines, which, in rhythmic, subtly varying horizontal bands, emphasizes the three-dimensional depth of the ceramic body.
The dark, matte engobe with warm brown undertones intensifies the graphic contrast between the raised and recessed areas. This controlled, material-conscious surface treatment is typical of Kumpmann's work from the 1960s and 1970s, during which she increasingly employed reduced color palettes, clear structures, and highly vitrified, densely sintered ceramic bodies.
from 1953 to 1986, Ms. Kumpmann served as the head of the potters' guild in Lower Saxony. This piece has an attribution mark,
