The vase features hand-painted … Read more A late 19th/early 20th Century Chinese porcelain bottle vase decorated in iron-red with swirling Foo dogs. The vase features hand-painted "Fu-lions" or Foo dogs, which are mythical imperial guardian lions often symbolizing protection and social status. This little vase would have traditionally been used as a miniature display vase or a snuff bottle.

The bottle has a cylindrical-to-ovoid body tapering into a narrow neck and a low foot ring. The mouth is unglazed. The foot is V-shaped and unglazed. The base is glazed and has a wax export stamp.

Provenance: From the estate of Dr. Andres Onate, former Dean of East Asian Studies at the University of Arizona. Dr. Onate served in China for the US State Department in the early 1980s and again in the early 1990s. This item was purchased in Beijing c 1982.

MEASUREMENTS
5 in (12.7 cm) tall x 1 5/8 in (4.1 cm) diameter. Weighs 6.1 oz.

CONDITION
The vase has no cracks or chips. It has customary kiln flaws, such as a few pits and a bump or two. The glaze around the neck and back is slightly stained. See less
