A beautifully organic studio pottery bowl by Karen Karnes, one of the most influential figures in postwar American ceramics. Rendered in her characteristic earth-toned palette, this hand-thrown stoneware bowl features softly asymmetrical walls, tactile salt-glazed surfaces, and atmospheric variations of ochre, charcoal, and warm sand tones. The subtle pooling and “orange peel” texture created through the salt-firing process give the piece an elemental, almost geological presence, while the restrained form reflects Karnes’s lifelong commitment to quiet functionality and sculptural balance.
Karen Karnes was a pioneering force in the American studio pottery movement and is especially celebrated for revitalizing salt-glaze ceramics in the United States during the 1960s and 1970s. After studying at Brooklyn College and Alfred University, she became associated with the legendary Black Mountain College, where she worked alongside leading avant-garde artists, musicians, and craftspeople of the era. Her work bridged functional pottery and modernist sculpture, combining the influence of Japanese folk pottery traditions with a distinctly American sensibility.
Karnes’s work is held in major museum collections including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Smithsonian American Art Museum, and the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, and she remains a touchstone for collectors of American studio ceramics.
