On offer is an abstract village landscape by the American Abstract Expressionist artist Gino F. Hollander (1924–2015). It showcases the signature mid-century modernist style that made him a popular figure in the mid-to-late 20th century art scene.
The composition depicts an abstracted, clustered hillside village. It strongly reflects the Spanish cliffside villages that Hollander frequently painted after he moved his family to Spain in 1962. The artwork utilizes his trademark earthy, muted palette. It relies heavily on textured shades of ochre, umber, cream white, and dark brown wash. It blends thick, graphic sweeps of white paint with thin, dripping washes. Bold black calligraphic linework defines the geometric blocks of the buildings and small windows.
Gino Hollander (born Eugene F. Hollander) lived a remarkably adventurous life. Before dedicating himself to painting in 1960, he served as a World War II ski trooper and worked as an award-winning documentary filmmaker.
He became a prominent figure in the New York Abstract Expressionist movement, frequently mingling with legendary artists at Greenwich Village’s famous Cedar Tavern. Hollander was among the early pioneers to experiment extensively with emerging acrylic formulas. His art quickly caught the attention of prominent 20th-century figures, and his works were collected by icons such as Jacqueline Kennedy, Steve McQueen, Norman Rockwell, Ralph Lauren and now, perhaps, you.
