Dean Meeker
Birth
1920 (Orchard, Colorado)
Death
2002 (Madison, Wisconsin)
Dean Meeker, nationally known printmaker, has devoted the majority of his professional life to the expressive possibilities of serigraphy. He was born in Orchard, Colorado, the only child of Isaac and Jeanette Meeker. His father was a successful construction firm superintendent during these early years in Colorado. Later, the Meeker family moved to Billings, Montana, where Dean received his secondary education. It was in the Montana High School that his interest in art was fostered through the influence of his art teacher.
It was at the Chicago Art Institute that Meeker began serious study under the guidance of Boris Anisfeld and Albin Polasik. His studies concentrated in painting, with minor exposure in etching and lithography. His first contact with screen printing was the result of part time employment in local, commercial silkscreen firms.
After a year in the Army, Meeker returned to the Art Institute in Chicago to complete work for his B.F.A. and M.F.A. degrees. After graduation from the Art Institute, he decided to attend Northwestern University in Evanston to gain further insight into art history, philosophy, literature, anthropology, and speech.
The University of Wisconsin asked him to become a member of their art faculty in 1946, a position he has long held. His first teaching encounters were in life drawing and painting, but through the insistence of some interested students, he began unofficially teaching serigraphy. By 1950 enthusiastic response prompted official acceptance of the course into the art department curriculum.
In addition to teaching, lecturing, traveling, completing commissions, and raising a family, time was spent in 1962 researching and designing a printing press that would accommodate intaglio, relief, and the surface printing process. The result of his efforts has provided many printmakers and institutions with a versatile and reliable press.
