This stoneware vase was produced by the Mougin workshop in Nancy in the 1920s, at a time when Joseph Mougin—winner of the Grand Prix for Art Ceramics at the 1925 International Exhibition of Decorative Arts in Paris—was shifting his production towards the clean lines of Art Deco. The ovoid body on a pedestal base is entirely structured by a molded relief of vertical ribs and stacked oval cabochons, an architectural vocabulary devoid of naturalistic references. The ivory crackle glaze results from a masterful high-fire technique, inherited from Far Eastern ceramic techniques: the difference in shrinkage between the stoneware body and the glaze produces a network of fine linear cracks that unify the surface. Marked in relief Mougin / Nancy, model 310J. Excellent condition. This piece has an attribution mark,
