Claude Monet
French, 1840–1926
Claude Monet was the founder of French Impressionist painting and the most consistent practitioner of its philosophy of expressing one's perceptions before nature. Over the course of his prolific career, he produced more than 2,000 paintings. By the end of the 1890s he was well established and hailed as France's leading landscape painter. Monet's most celebrated late works are his monumental Nymphéas panels—depictions of his water lily garden at Giverny—twenty-two of which were installed permanently in the Musée de l'Orangerie in Paris in 1927. This poster featuring Nymphéas (1904–05) was produced in 2010, in conjunction with Claude Monet: Late Work at Gagosian, West 21st Street, New York, an exhibition focused on the Impressionist's late paintings inspired by his gardens at Giverny.
