An icon of Italian design, the model 503 wooden sideboard, designed in 1957 by Gianfranco Frattini and produced by Bernini, features clean lines and a rationalist and sophisticated structure typical of Frattini. Made of fine wood with warm, dark grain that enhances the quality of craftsmanship of the piece. The cabinet has 3 container compartments hidden by sliding shutter doors. The left compartment usually contains 4 drawers with integrated handles. It rests on a base with shaped and tapered wooden legs.
Gianfranco Frattini (15 May 1926 in Padua – 6 April 2004 in Milan) was an Italian architect and designer. He is part of the generation that made up the Italian design movement in the late 1950s and during the 1960s. Frattini graduated in Architecture from the Polytechnic University of Milan in 1953. He opened his professional practice in Milan, after working in the studio of his teacher and mentor Gio Ponti. His collaboration with Cesare Cassina for his eponymous company began in 1954, followed by collaborations with many other industrialists, such as Bernini, Arteluce, Acerbis, Fantoni, Artemide (for whom, among other products, he designed the historic Boalum lamp with Livio Castiglioni), Luci, Knoll, Lema and many others. Throughout his career he worked in both industrial design and architecture, focusing particularly on interiors. Glassware designed by Frattini for Progetti is in the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art, and the Boalum lamp (designed with Livio Castiglioni) produced by Artemide is in the collection of the Smithsonian, at the Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum.
