Great 17th-century italian painting. Oil on canvas, monumental in scale, artwork depicting herod's banquet with salome and the head of saint john the baptist. The intense and theatrical scene captures the climax of the gospel story: the head of john the baptist is brought on a platter to salome, herod, and the guests. On the left side, a beautiful maidservant places the macabre trophy on a platter, while salome, elegantly seated at the table, rotates her torso with a refined, almost dance-like movement. Herod, captured in a grave and meditative expression, dominates the psychological center of the scene.
the painting is distinguished by its scenographic layout, the rich color palette of the draperies, and the strong narrative tension, with figures arranged like actors on a stage. Particularly striking is the still life at the center of the composition and the presence, on the right edge, of a figure facing the viewer, perhaps a self-portrait of the artist. A painting of extraordinary pictorial quality and rich in exquisite detail, it harks back to the late-mannerist tuscan figurative culture of the early 17th century.
from a decorative standpoint, the painting has an extraordinary presence. Its large size, theatrical dark background, and the chromatic intensity of the costumes make it ideal for prestigious settings: state rooms, libraries, historic homes, and luxury hotels. The spectacular frame is made of finely carved, silvered, and lacquered wood, with some signs of aging that add to its charm. The frame was created for the painting by a skilled craftsman in the 20th century, with antique front decorative elements and a solid, modern rear frame. A rare frame in terms of quality and size, it complements and enhances an already exceptional work. The painting has already been restored with re-lining, replacement of the stretcher, and repainting in small areas. Overall, it is in good condition. Internal dimensions: h 187 x w 256 cm.
