Titus Kaphar
American, b. 1976

Titus Kaphar is an American contemporary painter and filmmaker whose work reconfigures art history to include African-American subjects. Kaphar received his BFA from San José State University and his MFA from Yale University. His paintings are often multidimensional and sculptural, with canvases that are cut, folded, or layered. In 2018, Kaphar was awarded a MacArthur Fellowship. Analogous Colors (2020), which depicts a Black mother holding a child represented by an empty silhouette, was featured on the cover of Time magazine on June 15, 2020, in conjunction with coverage of the George Floyd protests.
